Try someplace like ps2scene. If you're looking for specific sprites, you should try googling for something like "sonic sprite rips". You'll find many popular games have already had the sprites ripped. Strangely enough, the most popular use for ripped sprites is web comics based on the games.
A funny sonic based sprite web comic is Power Rings.

Another is inSONICnia. inSONICnia also has ripped sprites on their site.
