Hi,

What advantages are there to using the network adapter instead of USB to connect my PC and PS2?

If there aren't huge immediate advantages I may wait until I can afford the Linux kit rather than buy the adapter, then get another with the kit later.

1. It's a faster link
2. Much easier to setup and configure on the PC
3. Flexible, you can have PS2 plugged straight into PC, or PS2 connected to a hub or switch
4. Better loader (ps2link) with many more features than Naplink, which is the only loader that supports USB
5. Availability: the USB cable that Naplink supports is very specific which means it can be difficult to track down in some places, and in most cases it costs the same as (or more than!) the PS2 network adapter. You can find the network adapter anywhere the PS2 is sold
6. Last but certainly not least: the network adapter comes wtih a built-in IDE connector :)

Hi,

In my country the USB cable is easy to get - it is just a standard PC to PC USB cable. The network adapter on the other hand is difficult to get, usually requiring a special order or personal importation, and if ordered locally it costs at least three times as much as the USB cable - at least $60 whereas the USB cable is less than $20.

Unfortunately we get overcharged for all PS2 stuff from hardware to games. The official distributor does this just because they can. If I can find a suitable overseas source I'll import it myself; maybe I can even get the Linux kit that way.

Don't play Russian Roulette with the USB adapter. If you buy one and it doesn't have the PL2301 or PL2302 chipset, then it won't work with Naplink. Be sure to verify on the web or on the packaging that it contains the right chipset.

this network adaptor is only 20 bucks at this site and i havent really found a PL2301 usb cable anywhere except at www.lik-sang.com who i think sell things a little bit to high since there stuff is mostly all "import stuff" but anyway do you guys think this network adaptor will be compatible with ps2link? any help on this matter would be apprieciated.

IMHO, this won't work.

And for the pl-2301, just look at any computer store. It's not PS2 typical. That's a "USB<-->USB network USB cable", which enables you to create a small network of computers at home using those simple usb cables. They are sold ~$30 around my place.

Now, look at the price of the official network adapter, and see the price difference...
