Is it possible to take the HDD which came with FFXI and partition about 5 gigs and install blackrhino on it? If it is possible then, can I use ps2link to install the OS or can I use umcdr to burn an iso that can be read by ps2menu and installed? My PS2 is not modded.

You need the PS2/Linux boot disc to boot PS2/Linux. Period.
