I don't know if this should be considered warez, if that is the case, please forgive me, I'm acting out of good faith..

Is there an app for making the ps2 dvd player region free? I know of the commercially available Region X things, but I'm looking for a homebrew thingy...

If not, i've half-hearted looked into the possibility to develop my own, but i'm not entirely sure how to do this. I assume that the DVD region is stored somewhere in a file on the dvd. Is there a way to catch when the dvd driver is looking for this file, and instead report another region?

First of all, I am personally very sympathetic to this. Especially since DVD regions have never been intended to stop piracy (there is no technological way they can and never have), despite what the movie studios may say. It is simply nothing more than a mechanism to hand out distribution monopolies to different regions of the world so one region doesnt have to worry about competition (via legal licensed products) from another region. It simply prevents people who, through exercising their rights in the marketplace, from enjoying a preference for the products of one region over the other, while living/existing in a different region.

Having said that, and getting off my soapbox, its still a protection mechanism that Sony as a licensee of DVD trademarks, ip, and being a movie producer, must contractually include in its products. PS2Dev'ers generally try to steer clear of these types of issues and topics, unless it is something than can advance homebrew efforts significantly without simultanesouly increasing warez efforts. DVD regions is one of those gray areas, and especially since it isn:t terribly relevant to homebrew efforts, people here may prefer to avoid the issue altogether.

In other words, this topic may not be considered cool. :)
