PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Additional information about PS3 firmware updates, including v3.21 (once it becomes available), can be found here:
http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/index.htm

PS3 owners who have further questions should contact Consumer Services:

A firmware update that only removes some features...
It seems that I should buy another PS3 for playing games...

That sucks.

what security concerns? OtherOS been the main reason why most people stop hacking the ps3 systems (even though its pointless in the first place).

That doesnt concern me much because I only use the ps3 fat for Other OS. The PS3 Slim is for gamming.

I think the recent memory glitch hacking by geohot, xorloser and others is the main reason for their security concerns.

Well, it's logical... coming from the same big vegetables at Sony.
Other OS now allows to understand everything in PS3 security (if you have the time to do the researches and all the disassembly)
So their 'panic' plan is simple : replace this security with another one (keys/algo replacement and such...) and disable Other OS at the same time in order to 'try' again to protect it. However their is a flaw in their decision since the incoming update file may be understood uncompressed uncrypted and disassembled as well...

I think the people with high enough tech knowledge at sony didn't expect that panic move because they knew it wasn't the perfect answer. And that's why they denied the Other OS feature removal at first...

So what will happen in future is :
Custom update files will appear allowing people to upgrade without losing Other OS feature. Of course that will take a lots of time!
Strong advise : keep your fat away from upgrades and play on a slim.

So I bought the ps3 due to the otheros support and now they remove it ? Any one here from Europe with some legal knowledge that can tell me what kind of action can I take?

There's no legal action anyone can take. They are doing this for "security" reasons and if you even tried to bring it to court you would lose.

Right now, its ether a joke and that ps3 fat users will be able to keep OtherOS or that Sony must have some extra money too make there fans very mad and stop buying playstation products. We will see what will happen on April 1.

In germany they cannot take away things you paid for already. Here you'd probably have good actions.

Plus they also got around import tax laws on toy/consoles by stating the PS3 was a PC. (digital processing unit which allows PC functionality)

If that was removed then in theory they would be liable to repay import taxes on every fat PS3 with otherOS support sold in the EU.

I see a massive bill on the horizon for Sony.
(about 2.5% on each machine sold)

The import tax argument is bogus, and has been since long before the PS3 came out. See http://m.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/20/ps2_not_a_pc/ (note the part about how taxes for both dropped to zero in 2004).

Your right.

I do remember something about the ps3 needing to be classified as a computer and not a Toy for import reasons.

I just thought it was that ongoing tax issue (didn't know it got eventually sorted).

**EDIT**
It was the chemicals (DEH phthalates - illegal in toys but allowed in computers)
*******

Back on topic. I always thought that the OtherOs was given as a nod towards the legitimate homebrew scene (thinking of other experiements Net Yaroze and Ps2 Linux)
By giving an OtherOs there was no need to search for hacks to run code. The finding of those hacks may have found other major security holes.

So to remove OtherOs to prevent security holes seems like shooting themselves in the foot.

**Edit2**

Geoff is going to continue to support Ps3Linux as a personal hobby.
Meaning that there will still sporadic updates.

His post proves 100% its no April fools joke.

To do that they would need to prove that "security risk", this isn't USA where you just need to use that out of jail card...

It's a responsibility chain.

First, Ken Kutaragi makes an audacious bet.
Since he heard hackers explaining they hacked consoles because linux couldn't run on them without a hack, he offered an implicit deal : I let you run linux, you don't hack. It worked nicely.
Second, Nintendo made billions with plastic toys.
Third, Higher-ups at Sony got jealous and decided to turn ps3 into a plastic toy as well (cheapest as possible, to follow nintendo business model) and offer Ken Kutaragi a golden wall cupboard...
Fourth, Hackers get upset that OtherOS disappears from new manufactured PS3's (slim model) and consider the implicit deal over.
Five, hackers start finding new stuff...

Having a loss of feature is ugly and it's impossible no one is responsible, but not only one person is, I think. Globally I would say that once again, money greediness turned some nice trust into some betrayal feeling...

Anyway, in regard of long term future, it's good to have a console security hacked because that will allow devs to create emulators (of course running on hardware more powerful than the one current consoles are running on). And Other OS removal won't affect these devs (they won't upgrade and they will keep learning studying the PS3's innards)

I could show you the security risk for human life in relation to the engine power of cars, by statistics.
That would still not allow any company to limit their already sold cars to 100 km/h.
I could show you the risk to damage ears of kids by wearing headphones, that would still not allow any company to remotely limit the volume control.

edit:
as most customers probably won't dare to fight Sony, we should at least have a little fun IMO, just like with chuck norris has.

He isn't the one restricting access to your console.

I won't update any of my ps3's. I like the Cell platform too much to sacrifice any of my development platforms. This is a good reason for stopping playing games and hacking a little bit more ;)

This is a rather disappointing move made by Sony.

I have been trying to write a simplified kernel to learn the powerpc architecture since October of '08. Although haven't really had time over the past year to give much time to the project (new family member).

I only own three ps3 games (exclusives)... and not sure if another $300 console is worth the rare ps3 exclusives.

Perhaps the worst part is that going forward it will be hard to find a fat ps3 that doesn't have a firmware greater than 3.15. Unless someone figures out how to upgrade the firmware and keep the otheros or finds a way to downgrade the firmware then when our consoles die it's pretty much game over.

For those wondering if will worth buy another console just for gaming, consider buy a used console.
If you buy a new one, you are giving Sony more money and that what they want you to do.
I wont upgrade my CFW and continue with my Sexy Linux powered by CELL BE!!!

I just wanted to point out that people are still able to use the PSN and play games online. It seems the two popular things to do are to have the ps3 go through a proxy or setup a local intranet dns server that pretends to be the firmware update site.

I'll leave you to the googling for the rest of the details.

I wonder if Sony could be held liable for destruction of intellectual property. The update literally destroys IP that's not theirs on a platform primarily used by developers and researchers at universities. I don't think even giving the illusion of a "choice" of not upgrading would protect Sony from that liability and beware for those who always manage to "accidentally" do things.

Don't flood the market with used PS3s or buy a separate one for gaming. That just rewards them for this crap. This update is so they can "reclaim" users from computing to gaming, and tell publishers they have a larger installed userbase. It's a pretty brazen move to manipulate the PS3 game market this directly.

If you live in the US, contact your state's AG to investigate into the matter as well as your representative. Yet another Japanese-based company acting suspicously would make a good story in the media, as well. After all, they've gone after Illusion and Toyota.

Sorry about my rant, I keep coming across this post, day after day, and it just keeps angering me to no end, though I don't own a PS3. I wanted one so I could learn some parallel processing techniques, but oh well.

(I posted this already in sony's blog, but it got censored *hehe*)

So in case you're not US, but EU, just follow the link http://ec.europa.eu/competition/forms/consumer_form_en.html
It's free, simple and powerful. Just fill in the form and send it.

What should you claim? simply

selling counterfeit goods which are not what they claim to be, e.g., designer clothing, fake works of art, archaeological objects, etc.

Your PS3 suppose to support linux and all PS3 games? well, you paid for that, but one of those will not work today on.

Quote:
false advertising

on playstationlinux you can still read that the PS3 supports more than just all PS3 games, blue ray hd, dvds etc. it also supports Linux says sony. (With no linux, I could have bought a cheaper X360, which had more features at the beginning like in-game mp3 playing. was cheaper and had earlier HD movie renting).

I don't think this is about Japanese companys. It's rather about some management decision without the care of customer's rights.

to be honest, Sony shouldnt even worry about the PS3 Fat because they already have the "improve" ps3 slim. Now since we know it wasnt a joke, I wonder why they didnt disable the picture menu on the xmb to avoid tiff exploits.

External proxy servers can be used to collect PS3 login data, use your own proxy on a PC nearby instead, software is out there.
