Good theory, although IGN claims that 1.51 is the 'pending' version, as of today. So there must have been something else they caught when pushing out the fix for the 1.0 loophole (happens all the time, something is caught, and then pushed into a later patch because it is too late in the current dev cycle to implement and test).

the firmware 1.51 will most likely fix the WLAN security issues.
WPA protection will be available (currently only WEP is implemented).

14.3mb I'll post the info here after unpacking it. So far one person I talked to that installed said no WPA and unencrypted code does not run.

well, if you update to 1.51 and want to downgrade, i guess it'd be possible if when you went to flash it, the psp saw the Jap. 1.51 as something irregular and would go ahead with installing the US 1.5 back onto it.

I have 1.5, after SFO modifications to make it 1.6 the update started, but after it checked my installed version it informed me that I it can't update since I already have "current version".
So I don't think it will be different with the ver1.51, and will not be possible to flash it back to 1.50

I dunno if this is pushing what i can say or not, but in the wipeout files, one of them mentions "2.1-psp-1.5.1.internal"

Just for people who aren't sure how to get to the update (EBOOT.PBP file), here's the link from Sony.

Seeing as how I have a JP PSP (which I sadly updated to 1.50), my PSP was able to find it with the network update option.

I have a feeling that NA PSP's won't be able to find the update because they search for a different region's URL than the JP one.
What would be interesting is if someone with a NA PSP ran the Japanese update. It might prove interesting to see the results.

translated it says that Sony hasn't really touched upon what the security reinforcement is really about, blah blah blah, but they (the editors of the site, I presume) are guessing that the real purpose of the firmware update is to prevent ISO's extracted from UMD's from running off of a MS duo.

If their hypothesis is correct, then that means that 1.50 holders are not completely out of luck, and that ISO's may help in the boot-off-of-MS projects.

I have a North American PSP and downloaded and upgraded my firmware with 1.51 nothing realy i can notice when i do a network search it says I have the latest and no homebrew downloads

To the guy with the NA PSP - did you run the Japanese version of the 1.51 update. If so, and everything looks the same....

The firmware then must check the hardware or current firmware to see if it should have O as yes and X as no or vice versa (depending on region). Same with UMD movie region encoding, unless that's hardware locking it.

I updated my 1.50 PSP to 1.51 and I must say it added nothing special. I saw no obvious changes to the PSP so I can only deduce that the update added tighter security in preventing homebrew software.

I would assume any additions to wireless internet security would have been visible in the Network connections screen, but none were.

I am testing the Wipeout Pure browser now to see if it works after the update.

Webbrowser still works, so I cannot imagine they installed anything that would affect the network connection or wireless capabilities.
